must come to an end? Nah, they just move on and turn into other good things. Mom and Dad left today. We had a week filled with Christmas activities, food, fun, laughter, food, snow, cold dog noses, food, movies (including some VERY old home movies of Mom when she was little) and lots of eating FOOD!
You all know how our Christmas eve night went. It got a little worse after my middle of the night blog post. But by morning it was all ok. Will never went back to sleep, but Mom took the second shift and found a way to keep him occupied till the sun came up. Surprisingly he didn't go back to sleep till that night. Mom and Dad found it pretty humorous that I blogged in the middle of the night. Dad said I should change the name of my blog to 'Real Time with Tara'. Ha!
Christmas eve day was pretty cold, snowy, and slightly windy. But the kids had their hearts set on sledding down a little hill in our neighborhood. Russell never left the car, but Dad did TRY it.
(side note here - I'm trying to put some sledding pictures in here. But I am having major technical difficulties. I'm literally working with half a computer screen. It's really cramping my creative flow and style. What's a broke artist to do? I think I'll sell my children tomorrow on craig's list. just kidding. sort of.)
Anyhow, after the sledding and freezing we went for an early dinner at El Gallo Giro. mmmmm.....
Then it was home to carry on with the Christmas eve festivities and traditions. The kids always get new Christmas jammies on Christmas eve. This year was fun because Mom and I were given new jammies too! We unwrapped them and then everyone ran off to change, then came back for a fashion show.
Tim read 'The night before Christmas' to us all. Then Will and Autumn carefully chose the plate of cookies for Santa.
Unfortunately we all turned our backs long enough for Mr. Endless Appetite to devour the plate of cookies. It was horrible and certain people were thoroughly disgusted with it. Luckily Will was upstairs so we quickly made a new replacement plate. Oh, and this was AFTER the night before when he ate two whole bags of flat bread out in the garage. I had a hard time convincing my parents that our dogs really aren't savage beasts that eat everything in sight all the time.
We finally made it to Christmas morning. It was so much fun and the kids did wonderful waiting and watching everyone open gifts. We like to do it one by one and not everyone ripping into whatever they can get their hands on.
Guitar Hero occupied Russell and Autumn for the afternoon.
While I helped Mom prepare a full blown turkey dinner. I think she missed being away from all the baby grandkids. She held this turkey on the sink like she wanted to give it a sink bath. I should have offered to let her give Russell a sink bath. Oh wait... that was 15 years ago. Good thing she's on her way back to babyland.
I filled the table and adorned myself with nostalgia. Like I said - no fancy shmancy designer stuff, just family hand me downs. The placemats are quilted christmas ones that mom made years ago. The dishes are Grandma Mathews dessert rose set that I LOVE and I also have her silverware set on there. I decided to wear the apron that Mom had made for her probably 20 years ago or more.
Dad did the usual great job on the turkey carving even though we didn't have an electric knife for him to use. We had SO much food!
Here's the propped up camera timer photo. We were all dying to dig in, but not before we documented the moment. Luckily everyone is so used to doing this it doesn't take much to git'er done.
After dinner we quickly cleaned up and ran off to the movies. We picked Maggie up to join us too. Bedtime Stories was a fun movie, even though it didn't change Dad's opinion of him as stupid silly.
Will's asthma got pretty bad a couple of times. Thank God though that he has finally learned how to come and tell us that he's having trouble. At one point Mom found him slumped over and when she asked him what was wrong he told her that his breathing was upsetting him. I quickly hooked him up to the nebulizer and he started to feel better.
I needed to get out for a walk and so did the dogs. I was happy when Mom and Dad agreed to go with me. The wind was blowing so I knew it would be darn chilly. I dug out all our winter clothes for them to put on - snow pants, gloves, boots, hats, and even the hats from Mike and Jayne. We looked and felt like we were going on an Arctic expedition.
You KNOW it's cold when Mom is dressed like this.
A few days ago the ice and slush was so bad on our street that Tim and the neighbor guys got out their tools and 4 wheelers to try and break up the ice and push it towards the field. I stayed inside and took a picture from the window.
Casey had a friend in mom. She oohed him and ahhed him till it was almost sickening. I think he's missing Grandma right now.
It wasn't always cold and cloudy. The sun did come out and it was cold and sunny! Mom took this shot creatively through a bridge fence.
On Sunday we spent the day in the kitchen and Mom taught me how to make khoresht bademjan. We videoed the process. Look for it soon. (hopefully. if my puter doesn't die) It was delish!
Here's Will in his amour of God.
Ephesians 6:10-18 (New International Version)
The Armor of God
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Though at this point he thought he was a dinosaur slayer.
Mom, Autumn and I had a girls lunch out at Miss Tami's cottage. It was wonderfully frilly and girly and our tea lunch was fabulous.
Thank you so much Mom and Dad for making the long journey here to spend the week with us! We love you!!!!
